On Tuesday 13th December Lt Col (Retired) Philip Richardson MBE spoke to the AS & A Level German students about the Military Missions that were established in Eastern Germany after the end of the Second World War. The role of these Missions was to liaise between Soviet Military Headquarters in Eastern Germany and the British Military Headquarters in Western Germany. They continued to exist until the reunification of Germany in 1990. Colonel Richardson explained the training and operational environment in which a small team of highly skilled officers and men helped to “Keep the Cold War Cold”. Discussions on life in Eastern Germany, vehicles, police and the STASI added interest to the presentation and provided a new insight for the students, some of whom are about to visit Berlin for the first time in February.
